NICE MID-DECEMBER DAY: The sky is generally sunny across much of Alabama this afternoon; clouds are confined to the southwest counties of the state. Temperatures are in the 60s in most communities; the warmest places are Anniston and Alex City at 2:00 with a mild 69 degrees. Montgomery was just behind at 68.

Looks like we can safely promise low 70s tomorrow with a partly to mostly sunny sky; sure won’t feel like it is 11 days before Christmas. The average high tomorrow for Birmingham is 56 degrees.

TO THE WEST: A major storm system over the Southwest U.S. is producing lots of mountain snow and valley rain; this will lift out tomorrow and head for the Great Lakes while slowly weakening. The trailing front will bring our next chance of showers late Thursday night into Friday. Before the rain arrives, clouds will increase during the day Thursday, but we should be dry with a high close to 70 degrees again.

Still looks like rain amounts will be 1/2 inch or less Friday for most places, and we don’t expect any issues with severe weather, and probably not much thunder. The rain should move out of the state late Friday night as drier air slowly eases into the state from the north.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weekend will be dry and a little cooler; the 12Z GFS is printing a high of 58 Saturday and 60 Sunday; the sky becomes partly sunny Saturday, and Sunday should feature a good supply of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Still looks like a rain event Tuesday of next week (December 20)… with another upper low coming out of the Southwest U.S. We note the 12Z run of the GFS is a little colder for Christmas weekend, but this is all in the land of voodoo at this point; we really can’t be specific with a Christmas forecast until this weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for long range ideas and details.
