An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

TOO WARM FOR DECEMBER: The average high for December 14 is 56… Birmingham is reporting 72 degrees at 2:00… 16 degrees above average, and within 5 degrees of the record high of 77 on this date, set in 1971. We have some high cirrus clouds overheard, but the low levels are dry and there is no rain close to Alabama.

CHANGES COMING: Tomorrow will be another warm day, with a high back in the low 70s, but clouds will increase, and we will bring in a chance of showers tomorrow night and Friday thanks to a slow moving cold front. With limited upper support, rain should be on the light side. The 12Z NAM is printing only 0.12″, while the GFS is 0.48″. So, we will forecast one-half inch of rain or less for most Alabama communities. The rain will move out of the state Friday night.

WEEKEND FORECAST: Cooler air slips into Alabama Saturday; the sky becomes mostly sunny, but the high will be in the mid to upper 50s, back to where we should be this time of the year. With a clear sky, Saturday night will be cold… most spots will be in the 31-35 degree range at daybreak Sunday. Then, we warm nicely Sunday afternoon with a high in the low 60s along with a bright sunny sky.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: Another short wave brings the next chance of rain on Tuesday, possibly lingering into early Wednesday. Then, much colder air blows in here on Friday December 23… followed by dry weather on Saturday and Sunday (Dec 24-25) with a slow warming trend. See the Weather Xtreme video for a day by day breakout of expected weather as we approach the Christmas weekend.

Again, the pattern suggests any shots of cold air around here will be short lived, and probably not too extreme.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
