It’s Foggy Out There in Spots!

| December 25, 2011 @ 10:26 pm

It’s good that Santa got in here last night, cause if he had to fly tonight, he would definitely be on instruments!

In many spots across North and Central Alabama, it is quite foggy right now.  Visibilities are down to between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in many spots.

The visibility is 1/2 mile in Calera and Gadsden, and 1/4 mile in Anniston.  Visibility was down to 3/4 of a mile in Huntsville.

Be cautious tonight if you are driving across North and Central Alabama.  Conditions are a little better over the Northwest corner of the state, where drier air has already filtered in.  That trend seems to be continuing at Huntsville as well, and make work a little further southeastward over the next few hours, reaching places like Hamilton and Jasper, as well as Cullman, and perhaps even Birmingham during the pre-dawn hours.  But in any case, be prepared for patchy, dense fog that will suddenly reduce visibilities to less than 1/4 of a mile.

The drier, cooler air is having another impact as well.  When combined with the cleared skies above the fog, it is allowing temperatures over the Tennessee Valley to drop well into the middle and lower 30s.  Spots over Northwest Alabama may well reach freezing or lower overnight.  We are expecting upper 30s in Birmingham.
