Today and Saturday should be especially nice for late December as we see temperatures reach afternoon highs in the 60s. But don’t break out the shorts just yet! It looks like some Arctic air is headed our way come New Years Day with temperatures falling back to highs in the 40s – maybe even upper 30s!

We stay dry today and Saturday along with the mild weather as the traveling weather systems remain across the northern tier of the US. But that changes on News Years Day as a strong trough coming across the northern Rockies on the 31st digs into the Central US opening the way for Arctic air to settle into the eastern half of the country.

A cold front will move through Central Alabama on New Years Day with clouds and sprinkles. Temperatures on the 1st are likely to remain in the 50s will little change during the day. But as evening arrives we should see temperatures begin to plummet toward the freezing mark. The GFS and the Euro are in reasonably lose agreement on the timing of the front on News Years Day, but they do differ on rain. I still think that the rain will be light sprinkles at best with little to measure, but there will be lots of clouds.

The sunshine returns for much of the rest of the week but lows will be in the 20s and highs only in the 40s. Looks for moderation in the temperatures around Wednesday and into Thursday so the cold shot will be fairly short-lived. If I can’t have snow, I’m glad to see it warm back up.

Another system as we head into the weekend promises another round of wet weather for us.

The overall pattern shifts back to a southwesterly flow pattern as we head into voodoo country around the 8th. And another shift brings cold weather again for the 12th. So the overall screaming message in the long range is a continuation of an active pattern.
