Mild, Showery Weekend Ahead

THIS AFTERNOON: The warm-up is progressing right on schedule. With a sunny sky, temperatures are mostly in the upper 50s and low 60s this afternoon, actually a little higher than forecast levels, and nobody is complaining about that.

We rise into the mid to upper 60s tomorrow afternoon with a partly sunny sky as the warming trend rolls along.

A FEW WEEKEND RAINDROPS: We will maintain the chance of showers both Saturday and Sunday as moisture levels rise; nothing especially heavy, however. And, we stay mild with highs in the 66-70 degree range over the weekend. About 15 degrees above average levels for early January in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Not much change in our overall thinking. We will maintain a chance of showers Monday, but rain and thunderstorms become more widespread Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night with a strong upper wave moving in from the west. We will monitor this for possible severe weather potential; at the moment forecast instability values look very low, but the models could very well be underestimating the low level warmth and buoyancy of the air.

The rain tapers off Wednesday, and much colder air flows into the state by Friday and the following weekend (January 13-15). Looks like we could wind up in the 15-25 degree range on one of those mornings during the peak of the cold snap. And, the cold air will be very dry with no risk of winter weather mischief. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
