Warming Trend Continues

I think if you liked yesterday, you will like today. Full sunshine continues across the Southeast US along with fairly typical temperatures as highs return to the lower and mid 50s across our area. Those temperatures are just about what we expect to see in mid January. But the overall pattern remains active and progressive, so things will be changing fairly quickly.

Moisture begins returning to our west Monday setting the stage for some wet weather for us and much of the Southeast US on Tuesday. A cold front stretching southwestward from a surface low over the eastern Great Lakes will move through Alabama on Tuesday afternoon providing us with a widespread rain event. The rainfall amounts should be fairly uniform with around a half inch for most locations. Fortunately the front and the upper trough will move through quickly allowing the sky to clear on Wednesday as the cold air arrives once again. This one will not be quite as cold as the one we are just coming out of.

Confidence is pretty high on this solution as the NAM, GFS, and ECMWF are all in very close agreement on the frontal position as well as the position of the surface low. As Hannibal Smith from the A Team used to say, “I love it when a plan comes together.” Well, I love it when the models come into good agreement!

The chill down is fairly quick as the trough zips by. We stay dry Wednesday and Thursday and slowly warm back up. A fast moving short wave trough in the nearly zonal flow enters the picture late Friday and into Saturday promising a quick shot at some isolated showers. But there does not appear to be any significant temperature change with a zonal flow. The ridge pumps up quickly after that short wave trough passes in response to a digging trough over the western US. That very sharp trough promises two things, a round of wet weather on Monday and another shot at some pretty cold air coming from northern Canada.

The long range view continues to show a fast moving pattern with another period of mild weather around the 27th and yet another deep trough over the eastern US around the 30th promising another period of ruggedly cold weather.
