Mild Weather All Week…

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: What a warm-up. After a frosty start with lows in the 20s, we are in the 60s this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. We do note some high clouds over West and South Alabama associated with the sub-tropical jet stream, but the low levels are very dry. Tonight won’t be as cold as last night, with most places seeing a low around 40 degrees.

MID-WEEK: Tomorrow will be dry and mild with a partly sunny sky. Most communities will reach the upper 60s, about 10-15 degrees above average for the last day of January in Alabama. Then, we will bring in the chance of showers Wednesday and Wednesday night with thanks to an approaching short wave. There might be a little thunder in spots, but there is no significant risk of severe weather, and rain amounts should be under 1/2 inch. The rain will end late Wednesday night, or during the pre-dawn hours Thursday.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These two days are looking mostly dry and very mild. Some sun should break through the clouds during the day Thursday, and Friday will feature a mix of sun and clouds. Afternoon highs will be more like spring; somewhere between 67 and 70 degrees.

OUR WEEKEND: No doubt we will need to mention a chance of showers both Saturday and Sunday; much like the mid-week system there could be some thunder, but this is not a severe weather setup. We might have to watch for heavy rain with a nearly stationary upper low northwest of the state, but the 12Z GFS looks a little drier thanks to a convective complex that sits on the Gulf Coast disrupting the good inflow of moisture into this part of the state. The rain over the weekend won’t be continuous, and the sun just might poke out at times. And, we stay mild with highs in the 60s both days.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS shows drier and slightly cooler air moving into the state early next week, but with such a plethora of solutions in recent days, a confidence in a specific solution remains rather low at this point.

LONG RANGE: The 12Z operational GFS shows a big time cold air shot moving into Alabama around Feb 10-12…. if by chance that is correct it could get really cold here with some of that air over Alaska getting into the mix. Keep in mind Fort Yukon dropped to -60 (F) this morning. But, that will probably disappear on future runs. The GFS ensembles tend to hold a positive NAO through the period. See the Weather Xtreme video for all the graphics and details.
