Rain At Times This Weekend

THIS MORNING: It is actually a chilly morning, especially over Northeast Alabama. Gadsden is down to 39 degrees at 5:00; our Skywatcher at Black Creek, northeast of Gadsden, at one point hit the freezing mark earlier this morning. But, to the west, it is warmer at Birmingham with 51 degrees at 5:00. The sky is mostly fair at daybreak, but clouds will increase today as the big storm over the Plains slowly gets closer.

We see lots of rain on radar to the west over parts of Mississippi, and showers are possible here late this afternoon and tonight.

WEEKEND FORECAST: The big storm that is producing blizzard conditions over parts of Colorado and Northwest Kansas this morning will bring some rain to Alabama over the weekend. But, the good news is that we don’t expect any severe weather, and it won’t rain all weekend long.

In fact, the models are trending toward a solution suggesting the most widespread rain could very well come tomorrow night. But, understand we could very well see rain at any time during the day tomorrow, but the main rain event should come from about 5:00 p.m. tomorrow through 8:00 a.m. Sunday. Rain amounts of one-half to one inch are likely, and while some thunder is certainly possible the lack of instability and weak lapse rates should prevent any severe weather issues.

We will hang on to the chance of a lingering shower Sunday morning, but it is sure looking like we will be dry by Sunday afternoon, especially from I-20 north.

Temperatures will remain mild for February with highs in the 60s tomorrow and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Model madness makes for a somewhat low confidence forecast, but the ECMWF looks dry Monday now (it showed a big rain event Monday just a couple of days ago). The GFS is generally dry, so we will go ahead and remove the chance of rain for Monday and the first half of the week. It will be slightly cooler with highs in the 57-60 degree range. The 06Z GFS shows the next rain event now coming at the end of the week on Friday Feb 10, but we note the ECMWF is bone dry that day. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details and all the graphics.

STORM ALERT 2012: Thanks to everybody for coming out last night; it was standing room only in Tuscaloosa. Next week our severe weather awareness show comes to Phil Campbell; we will be there Thursday evening.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
