Clouds this morning will give way to rain and storms this afternoon and tonight. The rain is along and just ahead of a cold front that will be moving through Central Alabama today and tonight. While there is some risk of strong thunderstorms, the risk appears marginal with the main threat being damaging wind. We’re also dealing with a weak wedge which shows up nicely on the surface map with 40s across the northern half of Georgia. The overall surface flow should come around more to a southerly one as the front approaches.

The band of rain and thunderstorms should be moving through the area late this afternoon and overnight. The bulk of the rain should be through Central Alabama by late morning Sunday. Some folks in western sections of Central Alabama will probably see some clearing skies by late afternoon though I think the bulk of the area will remain cloudy Sunday.

Monday the sun returns with a cool down as lows drop into the lower 40s and highs reach the middle and upper 50s. Alabama remains in a mild pattern as the cold air remains off to the north while we stay in a westerly to southwesterly flow pattern.

In the upper atmosphere a closed low will dig into southern California and eventually get all the way to Central Mexico. With this cut off low in that configuration, we stay in a mild pattern while the northern tier of the country gets colder with a fairly substantial long way trough over the eastern half of the country. By next weekend that cold air gets pushed off to the east as we stay mild. And right now it looks cloudy but dry for next weekend.

Rainfall amounts with the approaching storms are likely to be between a half inch and one inch. Some spots could see slightly higher amounts with some of the stronger storms.

Looking way out there, the GFS suggests a bit of a cooler look to the pattern, but it is nothing extreme. In fact the NAO continues to remain positive which supports the idea of nothing extremely cold for us.
