Colder Air Blows In By The Weekend

| February 7, 2012 @ 2:07 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today due to travel**

DRY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: A calm weather pattern continues for Alabama for the next 5 days. Tomorrow will be a clone of today; partly to mostly sunny with a high at or just over 60 degrees.

Then, cooler air drops into the state tomorrow night, and highs will be in the 50s on Thursday and Friday. The air will be dry, and we will forecast a good supply of sunshine on both of these days.

CHILLY WEEKEND: Another front moves through Friday night… there could be few sprinkles along the front, but significant rain is not expected due to dry air in place across Alabama.

A dry but chilly weekend is ahead. Below is output from the 12Z ECMWF, valid at midday Saturday…

This model, along with the GFS, suggest we won’t get out of the 40s Saturday, and we will adjust forecast temperatures downward on Saturday to reflect a high between 44 and 49 degrees. We will drop down into the 20s early Sunday, and the high Sunday afternoon should be in the low to mid 50s along with a good supply of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS shows the next rain potential in here on Tuesday of next week, but the ECMWF is faster and not as aggressive with moisture return.

LONG RANGE: Seems like the NAO is trying to go negative over the latter half of February, which would not be surprising at all considering the fact that the blocking pattern over the hemisphere is due to break down. But, still no overwhelming evidence of a downward NAO spike just yet. Stay tuned.
