THIS MORNING: Rain has moved out of this part of Alabama very quickly this morning, ahead of schedule. The rain is now well south and east of Montgomery, and there is a pretty decent chance we will see a little sunshine later today. And, the weather will be spring-like with a high near 70 degrees.

Tomorrow will be dry, with a partly sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s.

SATURDAY WETDOWN: Not much change in the overall thinking for the weekend. A deepening surface low will move northeast from the northern Gulf as the weekend begins, bringing a good soaking rain to much of Alabama. The rain should begin Saturday morning, and continue into Saturday night. Some thunder could be involved; SPC now has placed the southern half of Alabama in the standard “slight risk” for severe weather, but more than likely the best severe weather threat will be well south of here. It all depends on the track of the low…

The 06Z GFS runs the low from near Mobile to Roanoke… meaning the severe weather risk would be along and south of that line Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. Places like Dothan, Troy, Eufaula, and Opp will have a severe weather risk if this forecast is correct.

It will be a soaker one way or another; we will up the rain projection to one to two inches around the I-20 corridor, with lighter amounts up north over the Tennessee Valley. The rain should end late Saturday night.

DRIER SUNDAY: The sky becomes partly to mostly sunny by Sunday afternoon as the low pulls away; the day will be cooler with a high in the 48-53 degree range with a cool north breeze.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: We stay dry Monday and Tuesday… the next rain event will come at the middle of next week on Wednesday. And, still no sign of any seriously cold air, or winter weather mischief through the rest of February. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details and graphics.

STORM ALERT 2012: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama comes to Pleasant Grove High School tonight; we will show some very powerful stories from the generational tornado outbreak of April 27, 2011, including a look at the EF-4 tornado that did so much damage in Pleasant Grove and Concord. This is the Birmingham metro show, so we expect a big crowd. We kick things off at 6:30… be sure and get there early for a good seat.

CENTER POINT TOWN HALL: We will be doing a special town hall meeting at Center Point High School Sunday evening at 5:00 on the severe weather warning process in Alabama. We encourage you to come out and learn more about how the warning system worked during the early morning hours of January 23 when an EF-3 tornado tore through Center Point and Clay, killing one person. This event will be carried live on ABC 33/40, and the question and answer session will be streamed live.

Busy day again. I have weather programs today at Odenville Elementary in St. Clair County, and then at Crestline Elementary in Mountain Brook. From there it is on to Pleasant Grove for tonight’s show. I won’t be able to produce an afternoon video due to the travel schedule, but I will post some updated forecast notes this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
