Dry Days; Still Cool Today

CALM PATTERN: Looks like we can safely promise dry weather for Alabama through Thursday. Temperatures today will remain cool for early March; our average high today is 63, but we won’t get past the mid to upper 50s despite sunshine in full supply.

FREEZE TONIGHT? Most communities will fall into the 31 to 35 degree range by daybreak tomorrow; the colder valleys will clearly see a freeze. Keep in mind the average date of our last freeze is March 23, and we have had a freeze as late as April 23, so it is way too early to think about planting.

MID-WEEK: Look for mostly sunny days and fair nights through Thursday with a warming trend beginning tomorrow afternoon. We hit the mid 60s tomorrow, upper 60s Wednesday, and then low 70s Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: An upper low will hang around the Southwest U.S. with little movement over the latter half of the week. Moisture will begin to increase around here Thursday night and Friday, and we will mention a chance of showers Friday, but the best dynamic support and heaviest rain should remain west of Alabama. So, it won’t rain all day.

Pretty much the same story Saturday and Sunday. Yes, we will have a chance of showers both days (and maybe some thunder), but the rain won’t be continuous, and the heaviest rain stays west of Alabama. And, best of all, no chance of severe weather thanks to an upper ridge nosing into South Alabama from the Gulf of Mexico. The high both days should be close to 70 degrees.

The upper low finally weakens and moves northeast by early next week, and a trailing cold front will ease into Alabama Monday with a chance of showers continuing. But, with limited dynamic support, we don’t expect any severe weather, and SPC doesn’t define any severe weather threat for our state for the next 7 days.

LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any late season winter weather mischief around here… see the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

STORM ALERT 2012: The last storm on our annual weather tour is tonight… we will be at Pleasant Valley High School in Calhoun County. The show begins at 6:30… you will see some powerful stories from April 27, 2011… including a really good one on Shoal Creek. We hope to see you there.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show Wednesday night due to tonight’s weather tour.

I have weather programs planned today at Trinity UMC in Homewood for their pre-school kids, and at West Elementary at Vestavia. Busy day, but a good day. I won’t be able to post an afternoon video due to the travel schedule, but I will have some afternoon forecast notes here on the blog. Enjoy the day…
