Alabama at Mid-Afternoon

| March 11, 2012 @ 2:26 pm

Sun has been limited today across Central Alabama, which had made it feel a little cooler.  And don’t forget, today’s 3 is yesterday’s 2.

Temperatures at 3 p.m. has reached 72F at Tuscaloosa, 68F at Birmingham and 67F at Anniston.

It was getting breezy across Alabama, the result of a tightening pressure gradient between strengthening high pressure to the east and a trough of low pressure to the west of Alabama.

Some showers had worked into western Mississippi, but Alabama was rain free at 3 p.m.

A line of strong thunderstorms and rain did extend across western Arkansas, northwestern Louisiana and eastern Texas though. A tornado watch was in effect for places like Shreveport, Alexandria and Houston.

This activity will weaken as it pushes east ahead of a dying cold front. The remnant storms will reach western Alabama around midnight. Until then, we can expect a few light showers through the evening in a the strong southeasterly flow.

The storms may refire tomorrow afternoon as the front stalls just to our west. If there is enough afternoon heating, we could see a couple of strong, perhaps even severe, storms. The SPC does not have a slight risk posted for tomorrow for us. It has us in the “SEE TEXT” category, meaning that they are uncertain about severe weather being possible. In any case, it shouldn’t be significant.

Scattered daily afternoon storms will be possible all week and perhaps into next weekend as we remain in what looks more like a summertime pattern than a March pattern. Temperatures will be running some 15 degrees above normal all week, resulting in highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s from midweek through the weekend.
