Rain Ahead as Clouds Increase

Looks like the day will be a transition day as clouds increase ahead of the next weather system. But even with the clouds I expect highs to reach near 70 degrees this afternoon. I believe showers will hold off to our west with a strong surface high nosing across the Southeast US from a center over the Outer Banks. The closed low just south of the Four Corners area yesterday has begun to move out to the northeast and should be just northwest of Chicago by mid day on Monday. This will drag a surface front into our area providing us with our best chance of rain overnight tonight and into Monday.

SPC has a slight risk area in an elongated area from the Beaumont-Port Arthur area northward across Little Rock to South Central Missouri. It appears that there will be enough shear for rotating storms with the possibility of an isolated tornado in that area. Rainfall for us is likely to be one half inch to perhaps three quarters of an inch.

The upper trough moves across the Great Lakes but a weak upper ridge remains in place across the Southeast US. This means we have a frontal boundary in the area which will help to trigger isolated showers through much of the upcoming week. But the ridge is forecast to get stronger as the days go by, so by next weekend we may be able to see a break in the daily shower potential. With the ridge building stronger for much of the week after Monday, we should remain quite warm for March with highs near 80 from Wednesday into the weekend.

And as we have come to expect, the long range forecasts have once again flipped! The GFS is now suggesting that the upper ridge remains the dominant feature for the eastern half of the country keeping us warm and relatively dry!
