THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are generally cooler than forecast this afternoon due to persistent clouds, and areas of light rain that continue to move across the state. Some moderate rain was seen on radar as I write this in Marion County, around Hamilton in Northwest Alabama, and over East Alabama from Heflin south to Auburn. Most spots are in the 60s at mid-afternoon, still pretty comfortable, and today should be the coolest day of the week.

SPC actually has a small “slight risk” of severe weather area posted for parts of West Tennessee and North Mississippi, but I doubt if we see any issues there since the air is pretty stable, and we certainly don’t expect any severe weather in Alabama tonight. Showers should diminish after dark.

REST OF THE WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: A weakening upper low over the Great Lakes is headed northeast, and a weak surface front northwest of Alabama will wash out over the next 24 hours, leaving us in a warm, moist airmass for the rest of the week. With an upper ridge building in from the Gulf, this will set up a rather bland, summer-like pattern for our state. Each day will be unseasonably warm… highs around here will range from 77 to 83 each day with just the standard risk of “widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Widespread rain is not likely, and there is no risk of organized severe weather due to the lack of dynamic forcing. This pattern looks more like June instead of March.

The days will feature a mix of sun and clouds, and the nights will be mostly fair, although low clouds and some fog could form during the late night and early morning hours.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Not much change is expected early next week, but the 12Z GFS does bring the storm track back down this way in about 14 days with some risk of colder air, but nothing to suggest a killing freeze. See the afternoon edition of the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

AT THE BEACH: Spring break crowds will enjoy some pretty decent weather on the Gulf Coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores. They will have to deal with a mass of showers and storms this morning, but generally speaking for the rest of the week we are expecting mostly sunny days and fair nights, with only a very small risk of a shower. On the immediate coast, the high will be near 70 due to the cooler ocean water (water temperatures are generally in the upper 60s now), but inland the high will be in the mid to upper 70s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
