Too Warm For March

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: Birmingham is sitting at 85 degrees at 3:00 this afternoon…. within two degrees of the record high of 87 set way back in 1907. Like yesterday, just about all reporting stations in the state are in the 80s and there is no rain across our state. There is a nice breeze out of the southeast, averaging 10-20 mph, with occasionally higher gusts.

TO THE WEST: SPC has just issued a tornado watch for parts of Central and East Arkansas as the upper low creeps closer. The core of the ULL is still a little southwest of Lubbock, Texas, with a slow drift to the northeast. The active band of showers and storms will remain over Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi through tomorrow. Our day tomorrow will feature a partly sunny sky with a high in the low 80s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: As the upper low gets closer, we will mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms on both of these days. As we have said here, I don’t think we will have a “wash-out” either day, but a shower or storm could come at just about any time. The best coverage of showers and storms should come on Friday, and for now the risk of severe weather looks low with limited dynamic support. Highs will drop into the 78 to 81 degree range on both days.

OUR WEEKEND: We will forecast a mix of sun and clouds on Saturday, with just the chance of a few lingering, scattered showers. A pretty decent part of the day should be dry with a high in the upper 70s. Sunday promises to be a delightful day, with ample sunshine, lower humidity, and a high in the mid to upper 70s.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The first few days of next week are looking dry and mild… and we note the 12Z GFS shows a deep upper trough over the eastern U.S. around April 5 that just might bring that long awaited late season cold snap. Of course, this is pure voodoo at this point, but it would not surprise me at all if we had at least one more risk of frost, or even a freeze. Keep in mind we have seen a freeze here at late as April 23. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range details and ideas.

AT THE BEACH: Look for about 2 to 5 hours of sunshine tomorrow, with a few scattered showers possible by afternoon. On Thursday and Friday, there will be more clouds than sun on both days with scattered to numerous showers and storms. Then, on Saturday, just a few scattered showers, followed by sunny weather Sunday and Monday. Highs will remain in the low 70s on the immediate coast. The sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 72 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode…
