Rain Slowly Moving Into Alabama

THIS MORNING: Seems like everything on the weather map is in slow motion. The upper low over Oklahoma is just creeping along to the northeast, and the main band of rain and thunderstorms out ahead of the low is having a hard time moving into Alabama. But, slowly but surely, rain will be come more widespread across Alabama during the next 24 hours.

We will forecast periods of rain, and possibly a few thunderstorms, later today, tonight, and tomorrow. The rain won’t be continuous, but rain could come at any time. The heaviest rain will be near the Mississippi border, where some two inch amounts are possible by tomorrow night. Most spots around here should see 1/2 to one inch, with lighter totals near the Georgia border. The NAM is printing 0.95″ for Birmingham… while the GFS is drier with 0.54″.

The risk of severe weather looks very low. SPC has not defined any formal severe weather risk today, but we do note they have put much of Alabama in a standard “slight risk” tomorrow. Not sure we really have any serious severe weather issues, but I guess with an upper low to the northwest, a few low topped cells might try and rotate. We will keep an eye on the radar just in case, but to us the severe weather threat seems pretty marginal.

THE WEEKEND: The weather improves. A slot of drier air begins to move in here Saturday; we might have one or two stray showers, but they should be widely spaced, and mainly over South Alabama. Sunday promises to be a delightful day, with ample sunshine and lower humidity. Highs over the weekend will be in the 75 to 80 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: The weather stays dry Monday and Tuesday, but moist air comes back with some risk of scattered showers over the latter half of the week. Not much dynamic support, so the rain probably won’t be widespread or really heavy. Temperatures stay above average next week, with highs generally between 77 and 81.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and thunderstorms are likely today and tomorrow on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, but the showers become widely scattered Saturday with increasing amount of sunshine, and the weather looks delightful Sunday through Tuesday with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will be mostly in the low 70s, and the sea water temperatures are running around 70 degrees along the coast.
