Heavy Rain Over East Alabama, More Storms Possible

| March 23, 2012 @ 12:13 pm

Heavy rain continues to the east of Birmingham early this afternoon.

A flash flood warning remains in effect for parts of St. Clair County.

In the Birmingham area, water was reported flowing over streets in Irondale.

The heaviest rain extends from Ragland to south of Hokes Bluff. Ohatchee and Wellington are getting heavy rain. Areas over southern Etowah and Calhoun Counties may experience flooding as well.

The SPC has extended their standard severe weather risk, a slight risk, down into North Alabama. It does not come as far south as Birmingham. The SPC lists a probability of up to 15% for damaging wind and hail over North Alabama. The tornado threat is negligible (less than 2%).

CAPE values are running 500-1000 joules over a large part of the northern half of the state. You can see some breaks in the clouds over western sections. Temps have reached the 70s where there is sunshine. More storms could develop this afternoon and evening ahead of our slow moving cold front. While there is litle low level wind shear for tornadoes, there is overall shear for severe storm development, hence the slight risk.
