Drier Air Working Into Alabama

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: Most of the showers and storms at mid-afternoon are south of a line from Anniston to Clanton to Selma; drier air has worked into North and West Alabama, where the sun is shining. Slow moving storms this morning dumped heavy rain on some communities, and the NWS had to issue a few flash flood warnings. Tornado warnings were issued for some counties down in Southeast Alabama where instability values were higher; there was some storm damage north of Troy that was consistent with a small tornado.

OUR WEEKEND: Dry air wins the battle, and the weekend looks pretty good. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with only an outside risk of an afternoon shower; the best chance of a shower will be near the Tennessee border, closest to the upper low that is passing north of the state. Sunday will feature a sunny sky and lower humidity. The GFS is printing a high of 75 both days, and that sounds pretty good to us. Sunday morning will be cooler; some of the valleys and cool spots could reach the upper 40s at daybreak.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks pretty benign. The sky will stay sunny Monday and Tuesday; we might consider a few isolated showers late Wednesday and Thursday with a weak surface boundary dropping down this way from the north, but there is very little upper support, and showers should be few and far between. The weather stays warm with highs mostly in the low 80s.

AT THE BEACH: We are looking at delightful weather along the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores tomorrow through most of next week, with sunny mild days and fair nights. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the low 70s, with mid to upper 70s inland. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 71 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
