SPECTACULAR SPRING DAY: With a sun filled sky, temperatures are generally in the 78 to 82 degree range across Alabama this afternoon. Birmingham was reporting 80 degrees at 3:00.

TO THE NORTH: Chicago is at 45 degrees at 3:00 with a chilly northeast wind… keeping wind chill index values in the 30s. Quite the difference from last week when they were basking in record warmth.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The weather tomorrow and Wednesday will looks warm and dry; the sky will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the low to mid 80s. I guess we might consider the risk of a shower or storm late Wednesday over far North Alabama as a weakening surface front approaches. But, most of the state stays dry.

We will mention an outside risk of a shower Thursday, but a few scattered showers and storms should be a little more likely Friday as low level moisture increases, the overhead ridge weakens a bit. We stay warm with a high in the low 80s on these days.

WEEKEND FORECAST: Saturday will offer the best chance of showers and storms for Alabama as a short wave aloft brings some dynamic support. It won’t rain all day Saturday, but it could rain at any time during the day. A strong storm is not totally out of the question, but for now organized severe weather doesn’t look likely. The high Saturday will drop into the mid 70s with clouds and showers. Sunday should be drier, with a mix of sun and clouds and just a few lingering showers or storms in widely scattered spots.

APRIL COLD SNAP? We have warned growers that we almost always have a late season frost/freeze threat here in April, and sure enough the 12Z GFS is now on board with a significant shot of colder air working into Alabama next week. Way too early to be specific, but there could very well be one or more nights in the April 3-7 time frame with the risk of morning lows in the 25 to 35 degree range across the northern half of Alabama. In fact the GFS is hinting that the first half of April could features below average around here with a mean upper low developing over the Great Lakes. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details and graphics.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Tonight’s Guest WeatherBrain is a legend, Jack Hales. He needs no introduction to any person who has read the text of more than a couple of severe weather watches written since 1975. He recently retired after 46 years of Federal service including 36 years at the Storm Prediction center, formerly the National Severe Storms Forecast center. We begin the show at 8:30 p.m. CDT… and you can listen live via uStream here.
