Tennessee Storms Dying, More Could Fire Today

| May 5, 2012 @ 8:38 am

A complex of thunderstorms is gasping its last gasp right now as it moves out of Tennessee into extreme Northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia.

The dying showers will affect Madison, Jackson, Dekalb and perhaps Marshall Counties over the next hour.

These dying storms will lay down a boundary over Northeast Alabama this morning that could become a focus for storm development later today as the atmosphere heats up.

We will also be tracking an upper level disturbance over the Arklatex that has some cooler air aloft with it.  This will track across Alabama later today and will make our warm, moist low level air more unstable.  This could lead to more storm development.  But our wind shear is low, so storms won’t be able to get really organized.

The SPC has added a third area of slight risk today that covers much of South Carolina and Georgia as well as parts of southern North Carolina.  This risk area just noses into Cleburne, Randolph and a tiny bit of Cherokee Counties.  This is for destabilization that is expected from the upper disturbance that has been powering the dying storm complex.  As the atmosphere heats up today, storms will refire from the Alabama/Georgia border up into the Carolinas.

We will be watching the tail end of the leftover boundary back into Alabama as our atmosphere heats up as well and that cooler air aloft moves in from the west, but our wind shear is weather than that to the east and strong storms aren’t as likely.

Keep an eye to the sky for changing conditions today and be prepared if a storm develops in your area.  Otherwise, you are more likely to need sunscreen than rain gear today!
