Another Rough Day…

It has been another rough weekend for weather in the Deep South and we aren’t even to spring yet. Over two dozen tornado reports were received from Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

In our state, at 9:50 a.m., a tornado caused EF2 damage at Highland Lake in Blount County. The tornado was on the ground for six miles, damaging several dozen homes, including four with major damage. Several chicken houses were destroyed. Several hundred trees were snapped off or uprooted.

In Cherokee County, a tornado touched down four miles north of Piedmont just before 11 a.m. A barn was destroyed and another damaged along with three homes damaged. The path length for this EF2 tornado was 3 miles. The path width was 50 yards.

A short time later, this same tornado or another from the same storm produced a brief tornado 2 miles northwest of Spring Garden, or five miles north northeast of Piedmont. The damage was rated as EF2.

As the day wore on, activity began to fire in Georgia and South Carolina where conditions were more explosive. Multiple tornadic supercells were reported during the day. An anxious City of Atlanta braced for another storm even as crews were cleaning up from Friday night’s EF2 tornado in downtown that damaged the Georgia Dome, blew windows out of hotels and skyscrapers and caused several buildings to collapse. A tornado emergency was declared for Atlanta at 3:54 p.m. as a dangerous storm was located near Six Flags, bearing down on the city.

It was a surreal sight to see the SEC Basketball Tournament being played in the 9,100 seat arena at Georgia Tech with only official party, bands, players families and credentialed media present.
