THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures range from 90 at Gadsden to 97 at Montgomery at mid-afternoon… Birmingham is reporting 93 degrees as of 2:00. We have only a handful of isolated showers around the state.

TO THE NORTH: A big severe weather day, with the greatest risk from southern Ohio to near Long Island; looks like a tornado has hit Elmira, NY within the hour with structural damage being reported. Some of the storms now over Kentucky could wind up over far North Alabama late tonight; we will keep an eye on radar trends as they drop south.

BETTER CHANCE OF RAIN: Yes, I know there is some risk of a shower just about every day in summer, but the chance of your neighborhood getting some rain will increase a good bit tomorrow as the heat ridge breaks down a bit. It won’t rain everywhere, but it will clearly be our best coverage of showers and storms this week. While most of the showers will come tomorrow afternoon, we can’t totally rule out a morning shower based on a possible outflow boundary from convection north of Alabama tonight.

Rain totals will vary greatly, but some spots could see over 1/2 inch where heavier storms form. SPC has a “slight risk” of severe weather for areas just north and east of Alabama… don’t expect any major severe weather issues here, but a few strong storms are certainly possible. Temperatures will back down a bit tomorrow with a high in the low 90s.

OUR WEEKEND: Drier air begins to move into North Alabama Saturday, but the 12Z guidance now slows a slower frontal movement, which is probably the correct idea since this is the middle of summer. Looks like we will need to hang on to the risk of scattered showers and storms now on Saturday along and south of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden)… with the Tennessee Valley in drier air and rain-free. Then, on Sunday, drier air drops deeper into the state, and we will maintain a dry forecast. Highs over the weekend will be in the low to mid 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Still looks like an increase in the chance of showers and storms beginning on Wednesday… see the Weather Xtreme video for more details and all of the graphics that go along with this discussion.

GULF COAST WEATHER: No real change… very routine summer weather through the weekend with 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day along with the standard chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the 87 to 90 degree range along the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a toasty 90 degrees.
