Lightning Is Frightening

Thanks to David DeWeese for these images… he writes…

James,
My name is David DeWeese and I’m the Golf Course Superintendent at FarmLinks Golf Club in Sylacauga, AL. I follow the weather blog daily, and saw where Rusty Howard at Greystone sent in some pictures of lighting striking the ground at his course and causing some damage. We recently had a lighting strike hit the ground last week on Tuesday. We didn’t have the electrical problems that Rusty had, but I wanted to share some interesting pictures of what it did. All the lighting strikes that I have seen have been on trees and then run into the ground, and they usually create a hole in the ground where it leaves the tree and enters the ground. Is there any reason that you can think of why this didn’t do more damage? I think it is weird that it only left these lines.”

“This tree was hit by lightning last week early tuesday morning when we had that insane lightning in Hanceville”
