THIS AFTERNOON: New day, same ole story. Temperatures across Alabama are generally below forecast levels from MOS (model output statistics)… readings around here are generally in the low 80s, while the models figured we would be in the mid to upper 80s. The sky is mostly sunny, and humidity levels are fairly low.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Tomorrow will be another warm and dry day. Models push us up onto the upper 80s, but again that looks too warm; mid 80s are more likely with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Then, on Friday, moisture levels begin to rise, and I can’t rule out a shower somewhere late Friday afternoon or Friday night, but showers should be widely spaced. The high Friday will stay in the mid 80s with a mix of sun and clouds.

OUR WEEKEND: The weekend forecast remains about as clear as mud. No doubt we will need to mention a chance of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday and Saturday night. Beyond that, we still see big differences between the GFS and the ECMWF. The GFS hints at some risk of a stray shower Sunday morning, followed by a nice surge of cooler and drier air Monday.

On the other hand, the ECMWF looks drier for Alabama Saturday, and holds off the best chance of rain until Sunday and Monday thanks to a rather deep surface low moving eastward along the Gulf Coast.

Best we can do now is take a blended approach. We will mention a chance of showers and storms Saturday into Sunday, and then forecast a chance of rain mainly over South Alabama Monday closer to the surface low if indeed one forms there. The rain over the weekend should not be really heavy or continuous, but just be ready for a few passing showers.

Tuesday of next week looks dry, but moisture surges north Wednesday with a chance of showers. Be sure and see the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics that go along with this discussion.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for the high school football games across Alabama tomorrow night; a shower is possible Friday night, but the rain shouldn’t be widespread. Temperatures will be in the 70s both nights.

Auburn takes the weekend off; Alabama has a late date (8:15 p.m. kickoff) with Ole Miss Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and showers are possible during the game, so it looks like you will need to take the rain gear. I don’t think the rain will be heavy or continuous, just the chance of a few passing showers. Temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.

UAB hosts Tulsa at Legion Field Saturday afternoon (2:00 kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy, and a shower is possible during that game as well. The kickoff temperature will be near 80 degrees, falling into the 70s during the second half.
