WeatherBrains 349: He’s Off Fixing a Sprinkler

| October 3, 2012 @ 4:50 am

WeatherBrains Episode 349 is now online (October 1, 2012). If you are crazy about weather, this is THE netcast audio program for you!

Bruce Tremper, Utah Avalanche CenterTonight’s Guest WeatherBrain is a suggestion by Deputy Guest Booking Officer and friend of the podcast, Todd Foisy, a WeatherBrains alum who was on just a few weeks ago. Bruce Tremper is the Director of the Utah Avalanche Center. Bruce has worked as an avalanche professional for the past twenty years. He lives in Utah and was be involved in avalanche control for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

His work over the last twenty years has resulted in an increased understanding of avalanches. It’s amazing but in 95 percent of all avalanche accidents, the avalanche is triggered by the victim, or someone in the victim’s party. That IS a sobering thought. It’s also sobering to learn that an average-sized avalanche travels around 80 mph and it’s nearly impossible for someone to outrun an avalanche or even have time to get out of the way of one.

Other discussions in this weekly podcast include topics like:

  • Extremes: 113 at Death Valley, CA, and 22 at Stanley, ID
  • James Spann chokes up another award!
  • Lightning stats from JB
  • Alaska 50 percent covered by snow
  • Nadine still going strong – possibly kin to the Energizer Bunny
  • and more!

Our email bag officer is continuing to handle the incoming messages from our listeners.

WeatherBrains 101: For our topic this week, the professor heads overseas (not literally) to take a look at one of the established foundations to our understanding of weather systems, the Norweigan Cyclone Model. It may be hard to believe, but this theory which has stood the test of time was developed in the 1910s and 1920s without the benefit of satellite imagery and based almost exclusively on surface observations.

TWIWH: Bill Murray looks back at the week of October 1st.
