THIS AFTERNOON: A deep upper trough is keeping most of Alabama cloudy, cool, and damp this afternoon, but the sun has broken out in spots over the western half of the state. Temperatures are in the 60s at mid-afternoon, well below the average high of 80 degrees for October 2. Cullman reports only 61 degrees at 2:00.

REST OF THE WEEK: I still think we need to mention just an outside risk of a brief shower tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow night as the upper trough axis passes overhead, but the day should be warmer with a mix of sun and clouds and a high in the 70s. Then, we should reach the low 80s Thursday and Friday, and those two days will be rain-free with a good supply of sunshine both days. No rain threat for any of the high school football games this week.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A cold front will pass through Alabama Saturday night. The 12Z model runs suggest Saturday will be dry day with a high in the low 80s, but Sunday will be much cooler, with a high only in the low to mid 60s with a cool north breeze. We will mention a small risk of a shower late Saturday night or during the pre-dawn hours Sunday, but many places will stay dry due to the lack of moisture along the front. Both days should feature a partly to mostly sunny sky, with the clouds coming in mainly Saturday night during the frontal passage.

RACE WEEKEND: The chance of a shower at the Talladega Superspeedway Saturday afternoon is only about one in ten, and even less than that Sunday afternoon. Bottom line is that rain should not be an issue, although a brief shower is possible Saturday night. The high at Talladega Saturday will be in the low 80s Saturday, but only in the low to mid 60s Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Still looks like we drop into the 37 to 43 degree range early Monday morning. Next week looks delightful with sunny pleasant days and clear chilly nights.

TROPICS: A new system in the Atlantic between Africa and the Lesser Antilles has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm soon, but it will recurve into the open Atlantic and is no threat to the U.S. Tropical Storm Nadine is still hanging around (it has been out there for 20 days now) in the East Atlantic; it will finally become post-tropical late this week. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. The audio version of the show we recorded last night will be released tonight; you can watch the video version now in the player on the right sidebar of the blog.
