Cloudy, Cool, Damp Day For Alabama

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

ON THE MAPS: A deep upper trough axis remains west of Alabama this morning, and that will keep us mostly cloudy today with a little scattered light rain or drizzle possible. And, it will be much cooler with temperatures lingering in the 60s all day.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow should be brighter with a mix of sun and clouds along with a high in the mid to upper 70s. The upper trough is still overhead, and I guess an isolated shower might pop up somewhere, but most places will remain dry. Then, Thursday and Friday will be rain-free with highs creeping up into the low 80s. No rain for high school football games Thursday or Friday night.

OUR WEEKEND: A full latitude upper trough will become established over the eastern half of the U.S. this weekend, and will push a cold front into Alabama Saturday night. With only very limited moisture, it looks like showers along the front will be rather light and disorganized, which is the way most October cold fronts pass through. Then, a nice surge of very cool air drops in here Sunday with a high only in the low to mid 60s with a cool north breeze.

The weekend generally looks great for the races at Talladega; the risk of a shower during the day Saturday is only about one in five. Sunday at the track should be cool and dry.

NEXT WEEK: I fully expect to see some 30s across North Alabama early Monday. Most places will wind up in the 37-44 degree range; should be the coolest morning so far this season. The rest of the week looks delightful with sunny pleasant days and clear chilly nights. Just what we expect around here in October.

TROPICS: Hard to believe, but Tropical Storm Nadine is still hanging around the East Atlantic. It is now the Atlantic Ocean’s 10th longest-lasting tropical cyclone; the first advisory for the storm on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 11. The longest-lasting Atlantic cyclone ever was the San Ciriaco Hurricane of 1899, which hung on for 28 days. Nadine, which has been a cyclone for 20 days, is not expected to challenge that record.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. The audio version of this week’s show will be released tonight; we are waiting on a recorded interview that will be included. You can watch the video version in the player on the right side of the blog.
