This is from Steve Jones in Huntsville…. our resident quake expert…

A small magnitude 2.3 earthquake was registered by the USGS earlier today at 13:16:01 UTC (8:16:01 am CDT) in eastern Alabama near the city of Oxford, at a location approximately 137 km (88 mi) from Huntsville. The quake focus depth was located at a shallow 0.1 km (0.1 mi) underground. There have been no reports of damages from the earthquake.

In Huntsville, the initial P (pressure ) seismic body waves arrived some 23 seconds after the quake occurred; these were followed by the S (shear) waves which were observed to arrive in two phases beginning at 39 seconds after the quake. The S wave passage produced a peak vertical ground movement of approximately 14 nm at the AlabamaQuake seismic station at approximately +46 seconds.

The local seismogram and earthquake epicenter location map have been posted at the AlabamaQuake website on the “Huntsville Seismograms” and “Recent Earthquake Maps” pages, and also have been attached to this message.
