Long Dry Spell Ahead

DRIER AIR TAKING OVER: Last night’s weather went very much as expected. Storms were severe west of our state, but they weakened as they moved into Alabama after midnight, and to my knowledge there was not a single report of wind damage here. Thunder, lightning, gusty winds, and some heavy rain, but storms were well under severe limits. Keep in mind a storm must produce 58 mph wind, or 1″ diameter hail to be severe.
A special thanks to Bill Murray for keeping the blog updated during the late night/early morning hours. I get tons of questions on Facebook and Twitter, but I have to send people here since those platforms are not adequate for communicating long form weather information. You just can’t do Alabama weather updates in 140 characters when big storms are around.
Sunshine returns in full force today with a high in the low to mid 70s.
TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: Picture perfect weather, with sunny mild days and clear chilly nights. Highs in the 70s, and lows in the 40s.
The dry weather continues through much of next week as well. Long dry spells like this are actually common in October, which is our driest month of the year.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Look for a clear sky tonight and tomorrow night for the high school football games, with temperatures falling from the mid 60s at kickoff into the cool 50s by the second half of the games.
Saturday, Auburn travels to Nashville to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores (11:21 a.m. kickoff).. the sky will be totally cloudless with temperatures rising from the low 60s at kickoff into the mid to upper 60s by the fourth quarter. Alabama is also in the Volunteer State… they take on the Tennessee Vols (6:00 p.m. kickoff); the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from 60 at kickoff into the upper 40s by the final whistle.
UAB will host East Carolina at 6:00 Saturday evening at Legion Field… the sky will be clear; the kickoff temperature close to 68, falling into the 50s by the second half.
TROPICS: All is quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected through early next week.
BEACH WEATHER: Sunny days, clear nights on the Gulf Coast through much of next week. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the 77-80 degree range, with lows mostly in the 50s.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
