COLDER, DRIER: Temperatures early this morning are near the freezing mark at most communities, and the sky has cleared. Expect sunshine in full supply today with a high in the low 50s in most spots.

SNOW SHOWERS TONIGHT? An “Alberta clipper” type system will roll through the state tonight. These rarely have much moisture, but they do feature some decent lift, and we will mention a few snow showers tonight over the northeast corner of Alabama. Places like Scottsboro, Fort Payne, and maybe even Gadsden could see a few snow flakes from about midnight until 3:00 a.m., but no accumulation is expected and most people will sleep through it.

ONE DAY COLD SHOT: Following the clipper tomorrow will be much colder. Communities north of Birmingham won’t make it out of the 30s; we might see low 40s along I-20 (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston). The sky will be sunny thankfully. Then, tomorrow night, a very significant freeze is likely with a low in the mid 20s likely by daybreak Saturday.

WEEKEND FORECAST: Clouds will increase Saturday ahead of a cold front, and that front will have the potential to bring a little light rain Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. Model trends show the best chance of light rain from about 3:00 p.m. Saturday until 10:00 p.m. Amounts should be under a quarter of an inch with very limited moisture. And, a snow flake or two is possible Saturday night with this feature over far Northeast Alabama, but nothing significant is expected.

Sunday will be a dry day with ample sunshine statewide. The high both days will be in the 50s.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week looks rain-free with a slow warming trend; a chance we visit the 60s by mid-week. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas and all the graphics that go along with this discussion.
