Morning Update

Showers and a thunderstorm have developed across the northern half of Mississippi and the northern half of Alabama this morning in response to an approaching trough of low pressure.

An arc of moderate showers extends across the Tennessee Vaey of North Alabama over into Northwest Georgia around Atlanta. This is lifting northward.

Lighter showers extend across parts of Marion, Winston, Walker, Cullman, Blount, Etowah, Calhoun and Cleburne Counties.

To the south, a complex of heavier showers and even some thunder is across southern Tuscaloosa, Hale and into Perry Counties. The heaviest rain was near Marion.

Showers and storms will develop across the area today. They could be on the strong side, especially this afternoon, with some hail and winds gusting as high as 40 mph. I would not be surprised to see a few severe thunderstorm warnings.

Looking ahead, it could be an active week. Strong to severe storms are possible Tuesday. And they could be strong again Thursday, Friday and even Saturday. Don’t expect rainfall amounts to be too great, averaging one half to one inch this week. But isolated spots could pick up greater totals.
