Let the Roller Coaster Ride Begin

Looks like a roller coaster ride for Central Alabama for the upcoming week with showers and dry and showers and dry and showers and … you get the idea. Scattered showers were occurring this morning across parts of the Southeast including Alabama in response to the broad trough just to our west. That trough along with an approaching cold front coming out of the Ohio River Valley should continue to being chances for showers to the area today and this evening.

Temperatures are going to be warm today and for the upcoming week as we edge closer to summer. Look for highs to be in the 80s for the most part with lows primarily in the 60s.

The trough axis swings by tonight so Monday should be dry. Tuesday another disturbance comes by to our north dragging another weak front into and across the area. It moves through quickly so Wednesday should be primarily dry.

The latter part of the upcoming week features an interesting pattern with two huge troughs – one on the east coast and one over the western US. We’re between them with a sharp ridge. Yesterday the GFS was forecasting a rather intense short wave, but that solution has been replaced with a more reasonable one that shows a weak disturbance moving through the ridge. That will probably bring us some reasonably good chances for rain around Friday.

The rain chances this coming week all focus on showers, so do not look for any significant rainfall amounts. In fact, I doubt that everyone will even get rain because of the showery nature of the upcoming events. Those who do get rain will probably see a half inch or less.

The GFS is still suggesting a zonal flow for the latter part of May as we peek into voodoo land. And you’ve got to love the GFS! It paints a surface low between Florida and Cuba on June 1st – the start of hurricane season!!! Nope, I am not sticking my neck out on this one, but isn’t it nice that the GFS gives us something interesting to talk about.

I hope that you have a great Sunday. I had a wonderful time at Do Dah Day yesterday judging the parade. So many great outfits and so few prizes to award. God bless.
