An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

During the next seven days, we will see a shift from our wild, active spring weather pattern to one more typical of summer. This means warmer days ahead, and showers and storms will be more scattered, and weather systems that impact Alabama will be harder to define.

TODAY: This day looks warm and dry with a high in the mid 80s. Lots of sunshine.

TOMORROW: SPC has defined a slight risk of severe across Central Alabama tomorrow thanks to a weak surface front expected to pass through. It certainly won’t be a rainy day, but we will mention a chance of scattered, mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms, and where the storms do develop they could be pretty strong. Otherwise, the day will feature a mix of sun and clouds with afternoon temperatures peaking in the mid 80s again.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: An upper ridge begins to build across the state, but with the original front stalled somewhere nearby, and the instability generated by the heat of the day, we will mention a chance of isolated afternoon showers and storms on these days. Nothing widespread.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A big traffic jam develops over the U.S. in the upper air, with a big trough out west, and another trough over the east coast. We will be under the ridge in-between, and that should mean generally dry and very warm weather for the Memorial Day weekend. We will hang on to isolated afternoon showers Friday, but warm air aloft should suppress any showers over the weekend. With a good deal of sunshine, highs over the holiday weekend will be close to 90, making it the warmest weekend so far this year. We should note the weather along the Gulf coast should be generally dry as well this weekend; any showers should be few and far between.

VOODOO LAND: The GFS is still hanging on to the idea of an early season tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico by the time June arrives, but it is what it is… voodoo.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record this week’s show tomorrow night.

I will be speaking at Vance Elementary School down in Tuscaloosa County today; this is my last school program on meteorology this school year. This is the 30th year I have done weather programs in schools… I think I am about to begin teaching the third generation in coming years. It has been a great ride; the school trips and programs are always the best part of my day!

Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon…. enjoy the day!
