TOO COLD FOR LATE MARCH: The average high for Birmingham the last week of March is 70, with an average low of 45. You can forget numbers like that this week; afternoon temperatures today and tomorrow will be 20 to 25 degrees below average; we won’t get out of the 40s with an icy north wind.

Clouds will thicken over North Alabama later today and tonight with an impulse rotating around the base of the cold, deep upper trough, and that will have the potential to squeeze out a few snow flurries over the northern quarter of Alabama tonight and tomorrow morning. There might be a dusting on high terrain across Northeast Alabama, but the snow flakes should be just a novelty.

LATE SEASON FREEZE: We project lows between 27 and 31 degrees tomorrow and Wednesday morning… not in record territory, but clearly out of whack for late March. But, then again, we all know late season cold snaps are just a fact around here.

Most places will drop into the mid 30s early Thursday, but the colder valleys should experience yet another freeze. Then, a warming trend begins Thursday afternoon as we rise into the low 60s.

EASTER WEEKEND: Friday will be partly to mostly sunny; another cold morning with a low in the mid to upper 30s, but we rise into the mid 60s by Friday afternoon.

Moisture levels will begin to rise over the weekend. I think Saturday will be mostly dry, although we might consider a slight risk of a shower. Ten, on Sunday, we will mention a chance of showers over the northern half of Alabama as a cold front approaches. We don’t expect any severe weather, and highs over the weekend will be in the mid to upper 60s.

See the Weather Xtreme video for more details, along with all the maps, graphics, and charts.

AT THE BEACH: This is spring break week for many Alabama schools… the good news is that the week will be dry on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, but the weather will be cold for March. The high each afternoon through Wednesday will be close to 60, with morning lows in the 30s (yes… 30s on the beach!). Temperatures warm up a bit by the weekend, with a high around 70 degrees possible by Friday and Saturday.

The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 60 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
