RIGHT NOW: Not a bad Good Friday afternoon across Alabama. Clouds are slowly increasing, but we have enjoyed some “filtered sunshine” today with temperatures around 70 degrees. Montgomery and Alexander City have soared to 75 degrees. Nothing on the radar for now around here.

EASTER WEEKEND: A few showers are possible tonight across the northern half of Alabama along a weak surface boundary, but the air is pretty dry and I don’t expect much of anything really significant.

I know there are many Easter egg hunts and outdoor events going on this weekend, and unfortunately we can’t tell you the exact start and stop times for the rain this weekend. But, models have clearly trended a little drier for the daytime hours tomorrow. I still can’t rule out a shower or two, but I get the idea a reasonable part of the day will be dry. Then, rain becomes likely late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night as an upper wave approaches from the west.

For now it seems like the most widespread rain over the weekend comes from about 6:00 p.m. tomorrow through 6:00 a.m. Sunday. Then, during the day Sunday, we will still maintain the risk of showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm, but it certainly won’t rain all day. And, no severe weather threat.

We project a high in the upper 60s tomorrow, and low 70s Sunday. Rain totals over the next 72 hours should be in the one-half to one inch range.

NEXT WEEK: We will maintain a chance of showers into Monday as a cold front moves slowly through; we should reach the low to mid 70s Monday afternoon. But, much colder air blows in here on Tuesday with a high in the 50s along with a cool north wind.

We will have to watch for a late season frost/freeze situation early Wednesday… the GFS is printing 37 now for Birmingham, but it doesn’t handle shallow cold air layers very well near the surface. Could be colder. Growers will need to keep an eye on this.

A low is forecast to form in the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday… spreading rain back into Alabama Wednesday night into Thursday. Clearly the heaviest and most widespread rain will be over the southern half of the state, but the ECMWF solution suggests the rain could reach the Tennessee border.
