When Hurricane Sandy moves up the East Coast last October, seismographs across the country took notice.

Our friend Steve Jones at AlabamaQuake.com noticed this on his equipment in Huntsville.

It seems that the powerful storm’s waves pounding the shoreline create vibrations that are felt all the way across the country!

He reports: “I recorded elevated micro-seismicity here in Huntsville for several says with that storm back in October 2012, but did not realize that it was also being seen at so many other seismic stations across the USA. I have attached the graphic I created to show the comparison of Sandy’s storm track and the micro-seismic “view” of that activity at AlabamaQuake. I use this in the “Earthquake 101″ program to help the kids understand how we can sometimes watch the weather on seismographs!”

Here is the graphic:

He also posted an interesting article from Live Science about the phenomenon.
