Warm, Humid, Mostly Dry
The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes.
The calendar says May, but the weather sure says S.U.M.M.E.R !!!!! A little patchy fog this morning should burn off fairly quickly with the exception of those spots near bodies of waters such as streams and ponds and lakes. And we are headed for a very nice day. I really believe that the overall pattern will be essentially dry for the next several days – through Monday or Tuesday – but with it remaining warm there is always the possibility we might see an isolated shower or two.
The pinched ridge off to our west today will be migrating eastward through Monday. Across central Canada, a strong trough will make it’s way east and southeast. This will keep the weather active across the Plains states through Day 3 on the SPC outlooks. By Wednesday, that upper trough will drag a cold front into the Tennessee River Valley which should enhance our chances for showers at mid week.
Another upper ridge Friday and Saturday promises mostly dry weather. And temperatures are going to remain warm through all of the upcoming week with no sign of an air mass change as these fronts arrive and washout. In fact some spots today could see the thermometer reach 90 – ouch!!
Voodoo country continues to be of interest. The GFS began showing a tropical system last weekend, and it continues to do that. I still don’t put a lot of faith in the longer range forecast, but I have to admit that the GFS has been persistent with it. The latest model run suggests a weak tropical system across the Florida Straits and South Florida around June 4th and 5th. This current solution takes the system northward into the Carolinas by the 8th. Since the GFS has been persistent, I’ll give it a few points, but I’m not quite ready to name it just yet. But it does give us something to speculate about when the weather pattern for the next week or so is going to be rather flat!!
I wanted to extend my congratulations to Dr. Tim Coleman – yes, that’s right! Tim successfully defended his thesis at the University of Alabama Huntsville on Thursday – and did a right smart job of it, too – so he is now officially a PHD! I think his work on gravity waves could eventually be the basis for improved severe weather forecasting. Congratulations, Tim.
I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video here by 8 am or so tomorrow morning. I hope you enjoy the day whatever you have to do. Be sure to catch the weather on ABC 3340 for the next several days as I fill in for some of our vacationing staff. God bless.
