The upper low that was centered in the vicinity of Memphis, TN, this morning continued to plague us with unseasonably cool temperatures and a continuation of showers. I expect our high today to be around 60 – and that is nearly 20 degrees cooler than the 30-year average high of 79 for this date. Radar this morning had an area of showers over Northwest Alabama and North Central Mississippi. The showers were moving northward as a result of the upper flow around the low.

Looks like we will see some off and on clouds today with showers likely to occur. Because of the cold temperatures aloft, any showers that form this afternoon and evening could produce small hail.

The upper closed low will continue to spin over the Southeast US Monday, so we stay relatively cool with highs getting into the 60s with another good chance for showers and a thunderstorm or two. Tuesday, the closed low is finally expected to move into the Carolinas which should begin a nice warming trend for Central Alabama with highs getting into the 70s. With ridging aloft for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we should stay dry with highs getting back into the lower 80s by Thursday and Friday.

The next system begins to approach us on Friday and Saturday. I think we will be dry Friday with only scattered showers to deal with on Saturday. That next system should impact us on Sunday with what could be a wet day. But we’re verging on voodoo country, so timing may change that forecast.

Looking into week 2, yesterday the GFS was forecasting an obviously chilly May. While there is still a chilly look to the pattern through about May 14th, there has been a complete reversal to the pattern for the rest of the extended period with the GFS building a huge ridge over the Mississippi River Valley into the Great Lakes. This would be much warmer than what was depicted yesterday, but then, flip-flopping is something we know the GFS long range projections will do.
