Who could ask for any better weather for Central Alabama? The morning humidity peaked at 80 percent instead of the typical 95 to 100 percent with an afternoon humidity expected to be around 25 percent as dew points linger in the lower 40s. Add to that a clear sky with lots of sunshine and highs rising to around 80 degrees, and you have nearly perfect weather for the start of Memorial Day weekend.
And the weather is forecast to stay dry through the next seven days thanks to an upper level ridge that will be migrating slowly but steadily across the Southeast US. A weak disturbance moves through the flow on Monday, however, the atmosphere over the Southeast US will be too dry for anything more than some passing clouds. The ridge should gradually warm us up over the next week. We should hit close to 80 today, that’s about 3 degrees below the 30-year average for this date. But temperatures will warm into the middle and upper 80s as we head through the upcoming week. The ridge axis moves a little east of us by Saturday allowing the upper level low in the northern Rockies to come into the western Great Lakes. This will bring a front down into the Central Mississippi River Valley by next Saturday. For now, I’m keeping the forecast dry for Saturday, but depending on the timing of the approach of that front, we may need to introduce some small chance for showers.
Looking out into voodoo country, the ridge is the big player for week 2 as well, however, the GFS continues to taunt us with some tropical mischief with what could be a tropical storm coming out of the western Caribbean into Florida and the Southeast US. If you recall, we saw a similar pattern in the GFS last weekend which was expected to occur around June 1. So I do not put a lot of faith in the specifics of the forecast for June 9th, but it’s interesting to watch. Guess the GFS is well aware that June 1st begins the 2013 hurricane season, so its anxious to get some action going!

I did a lot of yard work yesterday, so I’m in hopes of spending more time relaxing today. Hope my wife doesn’t decide on other tasks that may need doing! Also getting ready for the big trip that starts on Wednesday. Just hope the moose in northern New Hampshire will put on their best smiles and line up for lots of photographs. I will have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted first thing on Sunday morning. I hope that you have a wonderful day and Godspeed.
