A Few Afternoon Showers Possible

ROUTINE LATE MAY/EARLY JUNE WEATHER: Not much change in the overall pattern across Alabama today, although the air aloft will be tad cooler, and moisture levels will be slightly higher. This means we will insert the risk of “widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”…. words you hear just about daily in the summer months here. Unfortunately, there is no skill at telling you exactly when and where the showers will pop up early in the day; they tend to be very random and widely spaced. Otherwise, the day will be partly sunny with a high in the 86-89 degree range for most places.

TO THE WEST: Another active severe weather day for the Great Plains; SPC has defined a “moderate risk” of severe weather for parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. A slight risk surrounds that from the Rio Grande into the Upper Midwest. Having severe weather out there is to be expected this time of the year.

REST OF THE WEEK: Not much change here tomorrow and Friday. Partly sunny, warm days with the risk of a passing afternoon shower or storm in spots. Highs will remain mostly in the upper 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: We expect a gradual increase in the number of scattered showers and storms; the best coverage should come on Sunday thanks to an approaching surface front. Still, the weekend certainly won’t be a total wash-out, and the sun will be out at times, especially on Saturday. The high should be in the upper 80s Saturday, and mid 80s Sunday. Organized severe weather is not expected, although a strong storm is possible in a few places.

NEXT WEEK: A stray shower is possible Monday, especially during the morning hours, but drier air creeps in here Monday afternoon. This should mean dry weather Tuesday, but moisture comes right back with some risk of scattered showers and storms on Wednesday.

And, we note the GFS is still advertising some type of tropical mischief (wave, depression) over the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the June 8-9 time frame; if this happens the heaviest rain should come over the Florida Peninsula… Alabama would be on the dry side.

AT THE BEACH: Very typical early summer weather is the story for the zone from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the weekend. About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day, with the daily opportunity of a few passing showers or thunderstorms in scattered spots. Highs in the 80s; the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 78 degrees.
