RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are generally south of a line from Huntsville to Haleyville to Millport this morning ahead of an upper trough passing through the state. There are a few heavy downpours at daybreak, but little lightning and nothing severe.

The rain will end from west to east over the next few hours, and by late morning all of the rain should be down across the southern half of the state, and the sky around here (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden, etc) should become partly sunny this afternoon as drier air works into the state. The high today should be in the mid to upper 80s.

HERE COMES THE SUMMER HEAT: A 5940 meter 500 mb ridge will build west of Alabama through mid-week, and it will nose in here, providing the hottest weather so far this year. Keep in mind we have failed to reach 90 degrees this year in Birmingham (based on data from the Birmingham Airport), but we should crack the big “90” degree mark easily tomorrow and Wednesday. The NAM is printing a high of 92 tomorrow, and 95 Wednesday, which seems reasonable (the GFS numbers are too high), and the sky should be partly to mostly sunny both days. Showers should be just about impossible to find due to the warm air aloft associated with the ridge.

THURSDAY: The ridge weakens a bit Thursday, allowing a weak surface boundary to approach. This could set off an afternoon shower or storm, but the rain won’t be widespread. The high Thursday should be in the low 90s.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The heat backs off a bit; we project a high around 90 degrees all three days, which is about what we expect in mid June in Alabama. The air will be dry, and for now we won’t mention any risk of showers in the formal forecast.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is very quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the week.

AT THE BEACH: Today will be generally cloudy along the coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores with a good chance of showers and storms; sunshine will be very limited. But, the weather will be much better tomorrow through Friday with about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day and just a few scattered showers or storms. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 79 degrees.
