A special salute to all you dads out there on this Father’s Day 2013!

We got off to a beautiful start this morning, with lows ranging from 69F at Anniston and Calera to 74F at Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Skies started off mostly sunny.

Moisture continues to flow into Alabama and the Deep South on a broad southerly flow around the Bermuda High in its climatological position over the Atlantic. The dewpoint at Tuscaloosa jumped from 64F to 71F in the past couple of hours as you saw a deeper moisture surge move into West Central Alabama. There were a few light showers on the radar over Marengo, Hale and Greene Counties.

To the west, showers were over northern Mississippi ahead of an approaching upper level disturbance that is moving into Arkansas. As we get deeper into the heating of the day, additional showers will form and some of them will grow into storms. The chance that you will get wet today is about 1 in 3, so not everyone will get wet, and the rain won’t last very long at any one location.

The showers and storms will quickly weaken this afternoon and should be done by dark. We can’t rule out a few showers overnight, but the chance is still pretty small. Look for a much better chance for showers and storms tomorrow and an even better chance on Tuesday as a series of disturbances moves over the area ahead of a slowly sinking cold front. A few storms could be strong, but significant severe weather is not expected. Look for lots of lightning and heavy rain though.
