Strong Storms Over Eastern Alabama

| June 16, 2013 @ 8:35 pm

An upper level disturbance swinging across Alabama continues to trigger showers and storms tonight over eastern Alabama.

The showers and storms are fairly widespread from northeastern Shelby and northern Talladega Counties through Calhoun, Cleburne, Cherokee, Etowah and DeKalb Counties.

The most intense storms at 8:15 were west southwest of Talladega, or just northeast of Vincent and Harpersville. Plenty of lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds and maybe even some small hail with that activity. Moderate to heavy rain extends northward to I-20 between Riverside and Anniston.

Even more intense storm activity is over southern Cherokee County southeast of Centre. Very intense lightning and torrential rains are falling here. Scott McClellan reports on Twitter that there is a tree down along Co Rd 41 in Cherokee County; 5 miles ESE of Little River Canyon.

Storms may redevelop late tonight, especially over East Central Alabama, with more heavy rain and lightning but they shouldn’t be severe. Monday will be an active day with fairly widespread shower and thunderstorm activity.
