Trending A Little Hotter This Week

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

UPPER HIGH NOSING INTO THE STATE: Alabama’s weather, generally speaking, will trend hotter and drier this week thanks to a strong upper high over Ohio easing into the state from the north. Still, a few spots could see a shower or thunderstorm later today; the high should be in the 85-89 degree range, still below average for mid-July in Alabama.

TOMORROW/WEDNESDAY: These two days should be mostly rain-free. Sure, this is the middle of summer, and we can really never rule out a shower or storm somewhere, but the warm air aloft associated with the upper high should keep a lid on the state, and any storms should be very widely spaced. Temperatures creep upward; the high tomorrow will be around 90, with low 90s likely on Wednesday.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The upper high breaks down, heights lower, and temperatures aloft will be cooler. This means the chance of showers and storms will be going up, and temperatures will come down a bit on these days. As usual, the best chance of showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but a morning shower can’t be totally ruled out. Highs will be in the 88-91 degree range with a mix of sun and clouds.

THE WEEKEND AHEAD: A pretty deep layer of tropical moisture will cover the state over the weekend with high PW values, so we will deal with at least scattered showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday; possibly numerous at times. The sun will be out at times, and the high should be in the mid to upper 80s. This pattern will linger into early next week.

JULY SO FAR: Interesting to note Birmingham’s average high so far this month is only 84 degrees… we should be up in the low 90s. On July 4, 5, and 6, temperatures failed to reach 80 degrees. And, our warmest day was on July 10 when the high was 92. A very “cool” month so far for Alabama.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Look like very typical summer weather for the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores this week. About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with a few scattered showers and storms around. Highs in the upper 80s along the immediate coast, with low 90s just a mile or two inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the low 80s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
