RADAR CHECK: As we said here this morning, the chance of rain is not zero today… we do note a few very small showers on radar at mid-afternoon… one was near the Shelby County Airport south of Alabaster. But, about 98 percent of the state is rain-free. Temperatures are not as warm as forecast; Birmingham reports only 87 degrees at 3:00. To the north, Huntsville, Decatur, and Muscle Shoals have touched 90 degrees; they are closer to the strong upper high over Indiana and Ohio. We note the 500 mb heights are at 6,000 meters with that high/heat bubble.

The isolated showers this evening will fade quickly, and most places will have a fair sky tonight.

TOMORROW: I get the idea showers and storms will remain pretty widely spaced, but no doubt a few could be around during the peak of the daytime heating process. The high resolution NAM hints the best chance will be over the northeast counties of the state; otherwise the day will be partly sunny with a high around 90 degrees.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The air aloft will be a bit colder, and we expect a general increase in the number of showers and storms on these days. Still, the showers will be scattered, and mostly during the afternoon and evening hours with a mixture of sun and clouds. The high will be somewhere between 87 and 90 both days.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: No real change. Temperatures remain below average for mid to late July, and we will have to dodge scattered showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday. On the positive side, we will see some decent intervals of sunshine both days. Highs will be mostly in the mid to upper 80s.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of drier air trying to move down into North Alabama early next week for a day or two (Monday and Tuesday). We will begin to trim the POPs (probability of precipitation) on these two days, and wait for better model clarity.

VOODOO LAND: Still no sign of any excessively hot weather (mid 90s or higher) for Alabama for the rest of July, and just about every day we will have the risk of a passing shower or storm in spots as moist air sticks around. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Not much change through the weekend… about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with the usual risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm in scattered spots. The high will be in the upper 80s along the immediate coast, with lows 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are in the low to mid 80s from Panama City over to Gulf Shores.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on the new episode we recorded last night.
