QUIET JULY MORNING: Nothing on the radar this morning across Alabama; the sky is generally clear and temperatures are in the low to mid 70s. Look for a good supply of sunshine this morning, but a few showers or storms could pop up during the peak of the daytime heating process later today. Chance of any one spot getting wet it about one in four, and the high should be very close to 90 degrees.

We note yesterday’s high in Birmingham was only 89… amazing that we have only recorded a high of 90 or higher on two days this month (July 10 and July 17). It has been considerably cooler than average this month, needless to say.

OUR WEEKEND: We expect a general increase in the number of showers and storms tomorrow and Sunday, but no wash-out. The sun will be out at times; just be ready for the occasional passing shower or thunderstorm, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures will be below average levels for late July; the high should be in the mid to upper 80s on both days.

The weather won’t change much next week with a blanket of moist air across the Deep South; the risk of scattered showers and storms will continue on a daily basis with a mix of sun and clouds. No real skill in trying to identify the days on which the coverage of showers and storms will be higher at this point. Highs next week should be close to 90 degrees on most days.

TROPICS: Nothing happening now across the Atlantic basin; the next MJO (Madden–Julian oscillation) pulse should come late in the month with an uptick in tropical weather action.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Looks fine through early next week from Panama City over to Gulf Shores; about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with the usual risk of a passing thunderstorm in scattered spots. The high on the immediate coast will hold in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 83 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
