Summer Mix Of Sun And Storms

RADAR CHECK: Widely scattered showers have started to form across North/Central Alabama at mid-afternoon. A heavy shower was just northwest of downtown Birmingham as I write this… but the more active showers and storms have been over the southern half of the state, especially near the Gulf Coast. Away from showers, temperatures are generally near the 90 degree mark.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The upper high that has been north of Alabama this week, responsible for very hot weather from Chicago over to New York and Boston, will break down. This means the air aloft will be a little cooler, and the air a little more unstable across our state, meaning a general increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms around here tomorrow and Sunday. That doesn’t mean a “rainy weekend”, but just be ready for the occasional shower or thunderstorm. The sky will feature a mix of sun and clouds both days with afternoon highs in the 87-90 degree range.
NEXT WEEK: The blanket of tropical air will continue to cover the Deep South, so the weather won’t change very much with the daily chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Skill in forecasting the placement and coverage of showers and storms on a daily basis isn’t all that good in summer, so the forecast will be pretty much a “broad brush”. Highs next week will be around 90 degrees, which is still below average for late July in Alabama.
AT THE BEACH: An upper low over the far northern Gulf of Mexico has produced a number of showers and storms on the coast today with generally cloudy conditions. This feature is moving slowly to the west, and conditions on the coast should improve over the weekend and into next week, with increasing amounts of sunshine and fewer showers and storms. Still, you will have to dodge occasional showers on a daily basis. We still expect 6 to 8 hours of sunshine on the coast most days next week.
