WET JULY DAY: As expected, showers and thunderstorms have been rather numerous across the great state of Alabama this evening. No severe weather, but we have dealt with a number of heavy downpours in the very moist airmass overhead. And, because of the clouds and rain, temperatures remain way below average; Birmingham reports only 72 degrees at 3:00.

At 3:30, the most active showers and storms were south of I-20, and moving east/southeast. Only a few patches of lingering light rain were over the northern third of the state. The band of heavier rain will continue to drop southward over the next few hours.

TOMORROW/WEDNESDAY: The weather will stay unsettled with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms both days as precipitable water values remain very high. While the best chance of rain will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we will be in a northwest flow aloft, and that can bring some late night or morning thunderstorm events at times. We will just have to keep an eye on radar and satellite trends. Between the showers there will be intervals of sunshine, and temperatures will remain below average with highs in the mid to upper 80s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These two days continue to look like the driest days of the week. Expect a pretty decent amount of sunshine both days with only isolated showers or storms around. The high will be close to 90… maybe even low 90s in a few spots.

THE WEEKEND: Another short wave will bring an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday; it won’t rain all day, but it could rain at any time during the day. Then, drier air tries to push into North Alabama Sunday with the best chance of showers moving down into the southern half of the state. We all know intrusions of dry air aren’t exactly common in late July, but we will start leaning in this direction in the forecast. The high Saturday and Sunday should be in the 86 to 90 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: Monday still looks relatively dry, but moisture returns by the middle of the week with the chance of scattered showers and storms increasing. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A large tropical wave has emerged off the coast of Africa; NHC puts a 30 percent chance of this developing into a tropical depression or storm within 48 hours. Any development should be slow; it is a very large wave and it will take some time to tighten up and develop a closed circulation. And, the system is fighting dry air in the eastern Atlantic.

GULF COAST WEATHER: The risk of scattered showers and storms will continue on the coast all week and into the weekend, but that is to be expected in July with a maritime tropical airmass locked in place. Expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with a high in the 80s in the immediate coast. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the low to mid 80s from Panama City west to Gulf Shores.
