Drier Air Arrives Over North Alabama

A CHANCE TO DRY OUT: Understand the chance of rain is not zero, but a nice surge of drier air has moved down into the northern half of Alabama this morning, meaning the chance of a shower for any one given location today and tomorrow is only about 5 to 10 percent. The sky will be generally sunny both days, and the weather will be warmer with afternoon highs between 87 and 90 degrees for most places. Showers should be confined mainly to the southern counties of Alabama, and even there they will be widely spaced.

OUR WEEKEND: Moisture returns Saturday, and we will bring back the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms as a surface front approaches from the north. No wash-out, but a passing storm is a decent possibility for sure. Sunday’s weather all depends on how far south the front goes. The latest GFS runs have been slower, and I think we will need to hang on to some risk of scattered showers Sunday, but the higher coverage should shift down into South Alabama. Highs over the weekend should remain in the 87 to 90 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: Monday looks relatively dry for the northern half of the state, but moisture returns Tuesday, and we will bring back the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

DORIAN: The tropical storm in the East Atlantic is packing sustained winds of 60 mph; it will move steadily west/northwest over the next five days, and should remain below hurricane strength due to dry air around the system, and some shear over the weekend. Dorian should turn north early next week, but it remains to be seen exactly where that turn will happen. Most of the NCEP ensemble members make the turn well east of the U.S…. but the last few operational GFS runs have Dorian very close to the U.S. East Coast. One way or another it does not look like a Gulf of Mexico system. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, with the usual risk of a few scattered storms each day. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 83 degrees.
